Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)

Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endoscopic Ultrasound

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a cutting-edge procedure that combines endoscopy and high-frequency ultrasound to examine the digestive tract and its surrounding organs. It provides much more detailed images than traditional CT scans or standard ultrasounds, especially for organs like the pancreas and bile ducts.

At Pramod Gastro & Liver Centre, Nandyal, we utilize EUS to "see through" the walls of the digestive tract. This allows Dr. S. V. Pramod Reddy to evaluate deep-seated tumors, cysts, and lymph nodes with incredible precision.

Why is EUS Performed?

EUS is recommended when detailed imaging of the digestive organs or surrounding tissues is needed for accurate diagnosis. Common indications include:

  • Suspected pancreatic diseases (tumors, cysts, or chronic pancreatitis).
  • Abnormal findings on a regular CT or MRI scan.
  • Unexplained abdominal pain or weight loss.
  • Staging of gastrointestinal cancers (esophagus, stomach, rectum).
  • Bile duct or gallbladder problems.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Capabilities

Advanced Diagnostic Use:

EUS allows for Fine Needle Aspiration (EUS-FNA). This means we can pass a tiny needle through the scope to take tissue samples from a tumor or lymph node without surgery. This is critical for confirming cancer or identifying the nature of a cyst.

Minimally Invasive Therapeutic Use:
  • Drainage of Pancreatic Pseudocysts: Safely draining fluid collections without open surgery.
  • Celiac Plexus Block: Injecting medication to relieve severe pain from pancreatic cancer.
  • Biliary Drainage: Management of bile duct obstructions in complex cases.
  • Guided Stent Placement: Treating obstructions deep within the abdomen.

How to Prepare

Preparation is similar to an Upper GI Endoscopy. You must avoid eating or drinking for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure. It is essential to discuss all current medications (especially blood thinners) with Dr. Pramod Reddy during your consultation.

The EUS Procedure

The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient service under sedation. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. A specialized endoscope with an ultrasound probe at the tip is guided through the mouth. The real-time ultrasound images are displayed on a high-definition monitor, allowing the doctor to map the internal structures precisely.

Benefits of EUS

  • Early Detection: Identifies small pancreatic tumors often missed by other scans.
  • Accurate Staging: Helps determine if a cancer is operable or has spread.
  • Avoids Open Surgery: Allows for biopsy and drainage through the mouth.
  • High Precision: Provides the clearest possible images of the bile duct and pancreas.
