Manometry & pH Studies

Advanced Diagnostics for Esophageal Function

Manometry and pH studies are specialized diagnostic tests used to evaluate the function of the esophagus and detect acid reflux disorders. These tests help doctors understand how well the muscles of the esophagus work and how often stomach acid flows back into the esophagus.

At Pramod Gastro & Liver Centre, Nandyal, these tests are essential for diagnosing conditions that imaging or standard endoscopy might miss, such as complex GERD, swallowing disorders, and esophageal motility problems.

Why are These Studies Necessary?

These tests are recommended when symptoms are persistent or atypical. Common reasons for evaluation include:

  • Chronic acid reflux or persistent heartburn.
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
  • Non-cardiac chest pain (chest pain not related to the heart).
  • Regurgitation of food or acid.
  • Persistent throat irritation or "silent reflux" symptoms.

Esophageal Manometry

This test measures the strength and coordination of the muscles in the esophagus. It is the gold standard for diagnosing:

  • Achalasia: A condition where the lower esophageal sphincter fails to open.
  • Esophageal Spasms: Uncoordinated muscle contractions.
  • Motility Disorders: Ineffective movement of food to the stomach.

pH Monitoring (Reflux Study)

pH monitoring measures the actual amount of acid reflux entering the esophagus over a 24-hour period. A small sensor records acid levels, helping to confirm a GERD diagnosis and correlating your symptoms (like cough or chest pain) directly with reflux episodes.

Preparation and Procedure

Preparation is key for accurate results. Patients must fast for several hours and may need to stop certain acid-suppressing medications as directed by Dr. S. V. Pramod Reddy.

What to Expect:
  • Manometry: A thin, pressure-sensitive catheter is guided through the nose into the esophagus while the patient swallows small sips of water.
  • pH Study: A small probe is placed to monitor acid levels. Patients can usually continue normal daily activities during the recording period.
  • Tolerance: The procedures are outpatient, safe, and generally well-tolerated with only mild nasal or throat discomfort.

Benefits of Specialized Testing

Unlike standard scans, these studies provide a "functional" map of your digestive tract. Benefits include:

  • Accurate diagnosis of complex reflux cases.
  • Essential evaluation before Anti-Reflux Surgery.
  • Identification of the root cause of swallowing difficulties.
  • Guidance for targeted medication or therapy.
