Sigmoidoscopy

Expert Lower GI Examination at Pramod Gastro & Liver Centre

Sigmoidoscopy is a specialized diagnostic procedure used to examine the lower part of the large intestine, specifically the rectum and the sigmoid colon. This region is vital for storing and moving waste before it leaves the body, and abnormalities here can lead to significant health issues.

At Pramod Gastro & Liver Centre, Nandyal, Sigmoidoscopy is performed by Dr. S. V. Pramod Reddy, an experienced Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist. Using modern endoscopic equipment, we ensure accurate diagnosis and early detection of lower gastrointestinal diseases.

What is Sigmoidoscopy?

The procedure uses a sigmoidoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a high-definition camera and a light source. As the scope is gently guided through the rectum, real-time images are transmitted to a monitor, allowing the doctor to inspect the lining of the colon for:

  • Inflammation and redness.
  • Ulcers or open sores.
  • Bleeding sites.
  • Polyps or abnormal growths.

Why is Sigmoidoscopy Done?

This procedure is essential for evaluating symptoms affecting the lower digestive tract, including:

  • Rectal bleeding or blood in stool.
  • Chronic diarrhea or persistent constipation.
  • Changes in bowel habits.
  • Persistent lower abdominal pain.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Screening for colorectal polyps and cancer.

Conditions Diagnosed

Sigmoidoscopy helps in the early detection and management of several conditions:

  • Colon Polyps
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Proctitis
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Diverticulosis
  • Intestinal Infections

Preparation and Procedure

How to Prepare

For clear visualization, the lower colon must be empty. Patients may be asked to:

  • Follow a liquid diet for 24 hours.
  • Use a prescribed enema or laxative to clean the rectum.
  • Adjust current medications as advised by the doctor.
During the Procedure

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 10 to 20 minutes. The patient lies on their side while the scope is gently inserted. Air may be introduced to expand the colon for better visibility. Most patients experience only minimal discomfort or a feeling of pressure.

Benefits & Recovery

Benefits: It is a minimally invasive, quick, and highly accurate way to collect biopsies or remove small polyps, often preventing the need for major surgery.

Recovery: Most patients return to normal activities immediately. Temporary bloating or gas may occur but usually resolves within a few hours. If a biopsy was performed, the results will be discussed during a follow-up visit.
